White flooring. It’s out there, folks – and it’s getting grubbier by the minute. But there’s something undeniably smart about light-coloured flooring – and in some environments, it’s a necessary feature. Pale surfaces have a brilliant way of making a space feel larger, airier, and more welcoming. They give off an instant impression of freshness, modernity, and even a touch of luxury that isn’t lost on clients or visitors.
They’re also a key indicator of hygiene, which doctors and dentists offices will want to shout about.
But if you’ve got light flooring in a busy workplace, you’ll know it comes with a price. White flooring shows up absolutely everything. Every grain of grit trodden in from the street, every splash of coffee from a morning rush, and every rogue crumb from an “al desko” lunch. Hard floors pick up shoe marks, dried-on rainwater, and sugary spills.
It can feel like you (and your floor) are fighting a losing battle against the daily grind.
The good news is, you don’t have to live with it – or rip up the floors for something browner. With a bit of know-how, and a prompt response to spills, you can keep your light-coloured flooring looking its best.
Prevention beats the cure
The best way to keep light flooring looking good is to stop the dirt getting onto it in the first place. You just need a bit of forward planning around your entryways.
Get some boot scrapers outside your main doors, and pop up a sign to encourage people to remove the worst of the mud before they step inside. Add a thick outdoor doormat here as well, to really limit the amount of filth that can get in!
Place some high quality, absorbent doormats just inside the entrance. These mats act as the final barrier, trapping fine grit and moisture from shoes. It’s a simple step, but it dramatically reduces the amount of abrasive dirt being walked onto your lovely pale carpets and floors. During a typical British winter (or spring, or summer…), you’ll be glad to have them, and they’ll help reduce slips and falls on hard floors as well.
While you’re at it, consider installing some chewing gum bins at the door as well. There’s nothing quite as frustrating as finding a piece of gum trodden deep into a light carpet…
If you’ve had problems with gum in your carpet before, then take action. Give people no excuse for discarding their chewing gum irresponsibly outdoors, where it can then be stuck to shoes and brought inside. But should the worst happen, don’t worry – it can be fixed!
Chewing gum
Chewing gum in your carpets is a total nightmare. It’s ugly, unhygienic, and can be a massive pain to remove. Over time, it’ll change colour, getting browner, greyer, and blacker, as it absorbs and holds onto the filth trodden into it. But because most chewing gum is white, it practically camouflages itself into the carpet, unseen until it’s hardened, flattened, and brown.
Tackling it quickly is the only way – because the longer gum is left, the harder it becomes, making removal more difficult.
If you discover a fresh patch of trodden-in gum, you need to harden it to make it brittle. A good way to do this is by applying ice in a sealed plastic bag directly onto the gum. Once it’s frozen solid, you can often carefully scrape the majority of it away with a blunt tool like a butter knife – but be gentle to avoid damaging the carpet fibres.
After scraping, there will likely be a residual mark or sticky patch left behind. Clean this area with your cleaning solution of choice, or a standard carpet spray, using a sponge or a brush.
If you’re at your wit’s end with stubborn remnants, then your only saviour is oil. But that’s actually a problem all of its own… So this is a last-ditch effort only!
A tiny squirt of WD-40 (seriously, we mean tiny) applied to a cloth and dabbed on the spot can sometimes work, breaking down the gum. You can technically use any oil to break down sticky things, but WD-40 won’t go rancid like food oils can, and has a fairly nice, clean smell.
Just be sure to blot and clean the area thoroughly afterwards with soapy water to remove any oil stains. Baking soda can help lift oil out, too. If you’re not sure, then test on an inconspicuous area first – or just leave well alone. This is an advanced technique, best left to the pros.
For hard floors, you might get away with a simple scrape, but if it’s glued itself down, try the oil trick. Be careful to fully clean it away to prevent slips and falls, and pop up a warning sign!
The secret to cleaning big spills? Blot, don’t scrub
Office fuel (a.k.a. coffee) can turn into a flooring nightmare in the blink of an eye. Despite your best efforts, spills are an inevitable part of office life – so when it happens, the most important thing to remember on light carpets is this: do not scrub.
Scrubbing a fresh spill is the single worst thing you can do. It forces the liquid deeper into the carpet fibres, turning a small spill into a large, set-in stain.
So don’t scrub. You’ve got to blot!
Grab as many kitchen towels as you can find, or a clean, dry cloth, and gently press down on the spill to soak up as much of the surface liquid as possible. Work from the outside of the spill inward to prevent it from spreading. The goal is to lift the liquid away, not grind it in.
The quicker you blot, the less time the liquid has to seep down and bond with the fibres.

Essential stain-busting supplies for light floors
You don’t always need a cupboard full of specialist chemicals to tackle a stain. In fact, some of the most effective cleaning solutions can be whipped up with ingredients you might have in the office kitchen.
For coffee stains, a simple DIY mixture works wonders.
Combine one tablespoon of washing up liquid with one tablespoon of white vinegar and around 500ml of water.
The washing up liquid cuts through any oily residues in the coffee, while the vinegar works to break down the staining compounds themselves.
Once you’ve blotted the spill, use a clean cloth to dab a little of this mixture onto the affected area. Keep blotting with a dry cloth as you go – you should see the stain start to transfer away from the carpet and onto your cloth. It’s so satisfying when it works!
For a really stubborn stain, you can follow this up with baking soda.
After applying your cleaning mixture and blotting it dry, dust the area liberally with baking soda. You can lightly work it into the fibres with a cloth or soft brush.
Baking soda is highly absorbent and great at latching onto the lingering oily compounds that cause stains. Leave it for an hour or so, or until it’s completely dry, and then hoover it up.
Even if it doesn’t disappear completely, the stain should be significantly better, and you can try other methods without worrying about chemicals mixing.

Light and white carpets have to be hoovered every day. If you want them looking amazing for life, it’s non-negotiable we’re afraid! Daily hoovering is the most effective way to prevent dirt building up, which gradually dulls the carpet. For hard floors, regular mopping stops surface debris from being scratched into the finish, and keeps light floors looking good.
