Whether your business has a ‘Green’ ethos, or certain members of your workforce suffer from allergies related to chemical cleaning products, there are innumerable reasons to make the switch to natural, homemade cleaning recipes. Far safer than commercially available chemical-packed cleaning agents, natural cleaners are incredibly environmentally friendly and just as effective as many store-bought alternatives.
Harnessing the power of natural ingredients, these homemade, green cleaning products are easy to make and great to use – and they’re often far cheaper than the products available on supermarket shelves. Here are a few of our favourite recipes, perfect for sprucing up your workplace – all while avoiding harming the environment.
1. Scented surface cleaner
Can you think of anything fresher and cleaner than the smell of lemon? Many commercial products add this aroma synthetically, but the real deal has powerful cleaning properties, especially when used alongside bicarbonate of soda. Lemon’s acidity and soda’s alkali levels help generate a powerful cleaning ‘fizz’ which cuts through all sorts of grease and grime.
To make your own, mix the juice of 3lemons with 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda and wait until the fizzing subsides before adding a drop of washing-up liquid and – if desired – a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil to add extra fresh fragrance. Use as a multi-surface spray for general cleaning.
2. Easy peasy screen cleaner
If your office is home to a lot of technology, you may be worried about using homemade products to look after your screens. But don’t worry, this very simple (and incredibly affordable) screen cleaning mixture is perfectly safe and costs a fraction of the price of commercial products – and it contains no nasty chemicals, either.
To make your own screen cleaner, simply fill a spray bottle with equal parts distilled water and white wine vinegar. Give your screen a spritz and a wipe – and voilà! A naturally clean screen.
We also gave a recipe for a screen cleaner last year, if you’d like to take a look at that as well.
3. Au naturale toilet cleaner
Hate pouring gallons of chemical bleach down the toilet every week? Time to take a more natural approach that offers all the cleaning power you need to keep workplace bathrooms pristine.
To make your own, pop 220g of baking soda into a glass bowl and add 25 drops of your preferred essential oil for a fresh fragrance. Use a wooden spoon to mash the oil into the soda until there is an even spread. Next put around 2 tablespoons of the mix into your toilet bowl and give it a good scrub around. Then pour 4 tablespoons of white wine vinegar into the bowl to create a powerful fizzing, cleaning effect.
